Inuit carving, mother and child, by John Kavik, Rankin Inlet
2014
Prismacolor black
The artist's distinct style and direct yet sensitive use of line is minimal in nature but is infused with an emotional intensity at the same time. Each of the artists from the Rankin Inlet worked towards developing a personal style in their own carvings even if it took years for a market to learn to appreciate them. The strength, power and inherent honesty of these works were perhaps never fully recognized until after the death of many of the carvers.
